Welcome to BACS

The British Association of Cargo Surveyors (BACS) was established in 1992, at which time membership was based on having a minimum of seven years experience as a Cargo Surveyor.

In 1996 it was agreed that a written examination should be introduced, which together with a minimum of five years experience would be the basis of membership of the Association.

In 1999 an Associate Membership was introduced in order to encourage new recruits to the profession. To qualify for Associate Membership surveyors must have a minimum of two years experience and take an elementary examination. They should also intend applying for full membership by taking the advanced examination as soon as practicable after gaining a further three years experience.

Membership

Contracting with a BACS Member gives our customers: insurance companies, cargo owners, cargo carriers and freight forwarders, assurance that they are working with experienced and qualified cargo surveying and loss investigating professionals. BACS has a program of study, examinations and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) that our members follow to attain Associate, Member and then Fellowship status. We also welcome Affiliate Members (non-surveying) from Cargo, Marine and the related Insurance industries, who wish to access the association’s knowledge base and educational events. Training

As well as the study syllabuses and examination for professional membership, BACS promotes seminars and conferences for all our members, including our Associates. Hosted with the support of the Marine Practice of Solicitors, Hill Dickinson, our regular seminars take place in the heart of the London and Manchester Marine Insurance Markets and are well attended by our key customers – marine insurance claims and underwriting professionals. The educational program assists BACS members to attain the mandatory CPD needed to keep their skills fresh and relevant and to maintain their membership level. BACS Training.
